To make Magnolia silk flower you will need the following materials:
1. Silk for Inner petals: Pre-starched professional fabric for silk flower art: Bridal satin /12/ or High quality satin /11/ or Velvet /8/ https://www.silkflowerartist.com/silk.html 2. Silk for outer petals: Pre-starched professional fabric for silk flower art: 100% Pure silk for Petals /8/ or Silk for lining (hard) /13/ or Finest Petal silk /7/ https://www.silkflowerartist.com/silk.html 3. Silk for covering flower stem: 100% Pure Silk Pile Velvet - White or Bridal satin /12/ or High quality satin /11/ 4. Silk for the flower center: Finest Petal silk /7/ or Silk for lining (hard) /13/ or 100% Pure Petal satin /16/ 5 Florist wire #30 gauge or #33 gauge for making petals 6. Florist wire #26 gauge or #24 gauge for making flower stem 7. Silk tape 5mm or 6mm for attaching the flower stem to a branch Cutting out petals: Whenever possible, petals and leaves should be cut on the bias (diagonal) of the fabric. One of the first things a person learns when working with fabric is that anything cut on the bias will have more elasticity, flexibility and "stretch" than when it is cut on the straight (horizontal or vertical) weave. Before cutting out the flower parts, choose a side of silk you are going to use as the "face" of the flower parts and which you are going to use as the back side of the flower parts. For example: silk satin is shiny and smooth on the right side and matte on the wrong side. This means that the right side of the silk (smooth and shiny) will be brighter after coloring than the wrong side of the silk. Look at your silk - can you see the difference between the right and the wrong sides? An important habit to cultivate when cutting petals and leaves is that of cutting just inside the pencil line. By training yourself always to cut off the markings, time will be saved since you will not have to go back later and trim off unsightly pencil lines. Mix of dyes for coloring flower parts: Pink: Raspberry pink 90% + Purple 10% Salad-green: Cornflower or Turquoise blue 40% + Lemon yellow 60% Light brown: Lemon yellow 90% + Golden brown 10% Dark brown: Golden brown 100% Here you can find Powder and Liquid dyes for silk flower making. Making flower center:
Coloring silk strips for the flower center. Cut off 2cm x 45 cm silk strip from a thin natural silk: I used the Finest petal silk /7/ from the Silk Flower Artist's online shop: www.silkflowerartist.com/silk Attaching flower to a natural tree branch Materials Needed:
Steps: Select a natural branch: Magnolia branches are ideal because of their shape and texture. Mix the Dye: Combine brown dye with a drop of cold green and a drop of purple dye. Mix well to achieve a shade that matches the branch. Dye the Silk Tape: Use the mixture to dye a piece of silk tape. Let it dry completely. Check the Color. Once dry, examine the tape color. If it blends well with the branch, proceed to the next step. For a darker tone, you can dye the same piece of silk a second time. Apply the Tape: Apply a thin layer of glue to the silk tape. Wrap it around the end of the branch. Ensure it blends naturally with the branch. Tip: For the best color intensity, let the silk tape dry on a plastic or glass surface.
